More Dartmoor industries

An evening walk on the south western region of the moors this time.  Not quite the good weather that the previous two walks had been but we covered some interesting ground wandering up the valley of the River Plym from just above Cadover bridge.

From Little Trowlesworthy Tor looking roughly north west you are looking [...]

Some Dartmoor stone

When I take a series of photos I try and decide whether there is anything that might be interesting for a blog posting. The next step is to try and find a theme for that posting (I’d like to think most of them succeed!). “Granite” and “Dartmoor” are so closely linked I found it [...]

Evening light around Heytor

Another lovely evening out in the Heytor area.  The light was stunning and, away from the bulk of Heytor, there were not many people about at all.  There were times when Heytor was quite busy however in the one above only the climbers are present.

During the walk from [...]

Late afternoon on the eastern edge of the moors

Although the ankle is still not good I ventured out for some short strolls on the moors yesterday (with it strapped up). The eastern area of Dartmoor around Hey Tor and Widecombe does not have the wide open spaces of the central moors and tends to be a little crowded at the height [...]

Sunset on Dartmoor

Looking to broaden the “ash plume sunset” images I headed up onto the moors yesterday evening.  I started off wandering around the Hey Tor area.  However the light was a bit glarey and lacked clarity (maybe an hour and a half before sunset) so I headed towards Honeybags/Chinkwell tors.  By the time I was there the [...]

Dartmoor evening

Leaving home to head for the moors on Wednesday evening it was overcast and didn’t look all that promising but when we got to the southern end of Hameldon there were some glimpses of the sun.

The light on the opposite ridge (east of Widecombe) was lovely. It was illuminating the tors there (Honeybags, [...]

A walk frustrated

Another of those days when I set out in hope of a walk.  This time I had not driven far before I realised I was unlikely to get much of a walk in and I planned to be back for the afternoon to watch the rugby so my time was a bit limited.

The original [...]

It was a cold day on Dartmoor...

I had not been out on the moors for far too long and the forecast was for some sun (how often have I worked on the basis of the weather forecast…).  I headed for Two Bridges planning to walk up the east bank of the West Dart walking on the ridge above Wistman’s Wood [...]

More Dartmoor snow

Today with very low temperatures in the UK and in the Westcountry (-14 deg C locally on the news and -7 deg C at my house overnight) I was not sure how far on to the moors I would be able to get.  I had planned to go out with a friend however the uncertainty meant [...]

Dartmoor AND snow

I’d been irritated at not having been able to get out on the moors with snow on the ground so far however I was lucky enough when I did get there.  Arriving on the moors at around 9am the sun was still low though bright and the snow had now started thawing yet.  The [...]
